EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is a treatment method that is highly effective in processing distressing events. While recalling the memory of the event, the working memory is loaded with distracting stimuli. This can be the therapist’s fingers moving rapidly back and forth in front of the eyes or a light bar with the light moving quickly and followed by the eyes. The memory loses its emotional intensity through the load on the working memory. In addition to trauma processing, EMDR can also be used for negative self-image and various fears and phobias. With EMDR, accelerated processing occurs, and people often notice relief from their symptoms after just a few sessions.
